Uganda’s women’s cricket team, the Victoria Pearls, are basking in glory after clinching the Women’s Day T20 Cup with a commanding 8-wicket victory over Namibia in the final at Entebbe Cricket Oval.

The win not only cemented their dominance in the tournament but also marked a fitting end to an impressive campaign.

Namibia, opting to bat first after winning the toss, suffered an early collapse, losing their captain Suné Wittmann in the first over.

Their struggles continued as Uganda’s bowling attack, spearheaded by Janet Mbabazi, tore through the batting lineup. Namibia found themselves reeling at 30/6 after 10 overs, with only Wilka Mwatiles (22) and Mekelaye (23) managing to put up some resistance.

Mbabazi, Uganda’s captain, delivered a stellar performance with the ball, taking 4 wickets for 19 runs in just 3 overs, limiting Namibia to 71/9 in 20 overs.

In response, Uganda’s chase got off to a rocky start as Mbabazi fell for a golden duck, but the team recovered swiftly. Iloku Esther steadied the innings with 17 runs, while Immaculate Nakisuyi took charge with a composed, unbeaten 30, guiding Uganda to victory in 12.3 overs.

Her contributions in both batting and fielding, including two crucial catches, earned her the Player of the Match award.

The Victoria Pearls’ journey to the title was marked by resilience and consistency. They began with a dominant 8-wicket victory over Hong Kong China before suffering a heartbreaking 1-wicket loss to Nepal.

However, Uganda bounced back with narrow wins, including a dramatic 1-run victory over Namibia and a 4-wicket win against Hong Kong.

A crushing 40-run revenge victory over Nepal in the second round and a 74-run demolition of Namibia in their final group match sealed their place in the championship showdown.

Their triumph in the final was particularly significant as it marked the first time Uganda defeated Namibia in the tournament, proving their growth and superiority when it mattered most.

Uganda’s women’s cricket team, the Victoria Pearls, will resume action on Wednesday, March 12, as they take on Hong Kong in the second round of the LYCA Women’s Day Cup.

The team, currently leading the standings with four points, is coming off a nail-biting one-run victory over Namibia and will be looking to build on that momentum after their scheduled rest day on Tuesday.

The Pearls’ last outing saw a stunning bowling performance from Sarah Akiteng, who claimed five wickets for just 14 runs to help Uganda defend a modest total of 71.

The victory not only solidified Uganda’s place at the top of the table but also proved their ability to win under pressure.

With two wins in three matches—against Hong Kong and Namibia—the Victoria Pearls are in a strong position to qualify for the final on March 16.

However, they will need to maintain their focus in the second round, where they will face Hong Kong again before crucial encounters with Nepal and Namibia.

Coach Lawrence Ssematimba will likely rely on key performers like Akiteng, Janet Mbabazi, and Esther Illoku, while also expecting improved batting displays to ensure the team continues its winning run.

Meanwhile, Uganda’s bowling attack, which has been their biggest strength so far, will once again be crucial in keeping their opponents at bay.

A win against Hong Kong on Wednesday will push Uganda closer to securing a spot in the final, but with every team still in contention, the battle for the top two spots remains intense.

Nepal Women pulled off a dramatic last-over victory against hosts Uganda, winning by just one wicket in a tense encounter at the LYCA Women’s Day Cup on Sunday.

After winning their opening match, Uganda found themselves in trouble early as Nepal’s bowlers kept them under pressure.

The Victoria Pearls struggled to build momentum, posting a modest total of 75/7 in 20 overs. The hosts lost wickets at regular intervals, with no batter managing a significant score.

Immaculate Nakisuuyi’s 22 runs were one of the few bright spots in an otherwise subdued innings.

Nepal’s disciplined bowling effort was led by Puja Mahato and Indu Barma, who kept Uganda’s batters quiet with tight spells, ensuring the target remained within reach.

Chasing 76, Nepal looked comfortable for most of their innings but suffered a dramatic collapse towards the end.

At 68/5, they seemed in control before a flurry of wickets saw them slip to 70/9, leaving the game on a knife’s edge.

Uganda’s bowlers, led by Immaculate Nakisuuyi and Sarah Walaza, fought back bravely, with Walaza picking up key wickets to keep the hosts in contention.

With just one wicket remaining, Nepal managed to scramble across the finish line with one ball to spare, securing a hard-fought victory.

With this win, Nepal bounced back from their opening defeat, while Uganda now has one win and one loss. The result keeps the tournament wide open as teams continue to battle for a spot in the final.

Uganda will now look to regroup as they prepare to face Namibia on Monday, while Nepal take on Hong Kong in what promises to be another thrilling contest.

Hosts Uganda made a strong start to their LYCA Women’s Day Cup 2025 campaign, securing an emphatic eight-wicket victory over Hong Kong, China, at the Entebbe Cricket Oval on Saturday.

Hong Kong, China, opted to bat first but struggled to accelerate against a disciplined Ugandan bowling attack, managing only 75/4 in their allotted 20 overs. Natasha Miles provided resistance with a solid 32, but wickets at crucial intervals restricted the scoring rate.

Immaculate Nakisuuyi led the charge for the Victoria Pearls, taking two wickets while also making her mark with the bat.

Chasing 76 for victory, Uganda made light work of the target, reaching 78/2 in 17.2 overs. Nakisuuyi contributed 26 runs, ensuring the home side cruised to victory with eight wickets in hand.

The second game of the day saw Nepal struggle against Namibia’s bowlers, folding for 92 in 20 overs. Namibia’s Mekelaye Mwatile and Wilka Mwatile were the standout performers, each claiming three wickets to dismantle Nepal’s batting lineup.

In reply, Namibia’s chase was interrupted by rain, reducing their target to 72 from 15 overs. Mekelaye Mwatile continued her all-round show, scoring 26 runs as Namibia reached 71/4 in 14.5 overs to win by six wickets via the D/L method.

Uganda’s Immaculate Nakisuuyi was the standout performer of the day, topping the rankings with 109 points, while Namibia’s Mekelaye Mwatile followed closely with 107 points. Natasha Miles led the batting charts with 32 runs, while Mekelaye Mwatile and Wilka Mwatile dominated the bowling rankings with three wickets each.

Uganda will be back in action on Sunday against Nepal, looking to maintain their winning momentum. Meanwhile, Namibia will take on Hong Kong, China, in the afternoon match, aiming to build on their opening victory.
