World No. 1 Jannik Sinner swept aside Alexander Zverev 6-1, 6-2 on Sunday to claim his first Madrid Open crown.

The Italian extended his winning streak to 23 matches and secured a record fifth consecutive Masters 1000 title, adding Madrid to triumphs in Paris, Indian Wells, Miami and Monte Carlo.

Zverev, a two-time champion in Madrid, struggled to cope with Sinner’s relentless pace and precision, falling in just over an hour.

The victory cements Sinner’s dominance on tour and makes him the clear favourite heading into Roland Garros later this month.

Hailey Baptiste delivered the shock of the Madrid Open by ending Aryna Sabalenka’s title defence and 15‑match winning streak in a dramatic quarterfinal.

The 30th seed fought back from a set down to beat the world No 1, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8/6), saving six match points in a two‑and‑a‑half‑hour battle.

Baptiste’s bold serving, 12 aces and even a serve‑and‑volley under pressure — denied Sabalenka a fourth crown in the Spanish capital.

Sabalenka, a three‑time champion and finalist in each of the last three editions, was undone by Baptiste’s aggression.

“It was a super tight match… I had to fight off some match points,” the American said. “I feel like now I’m starting to put it into action, and the world is seeing it.”

The 24‑year‑old now faces ninth seed Mirra Andreeva, who defeated Leylah Fernandez 7-6 (7/1), 6-3 to reach her first Madrid semifinal.

The Russian teenager, turning 19 today, arrives with an 11‑1 clay record this season and a recent title in Linz.
