Three-time Masaza Cup winners Mawokota have confirmed Richard Malinga will continue as head coach for the 2026 campaign, extending his long association with the side.

Malinga, returning for a fifth stint, arrives buoyed by recent success after guiding Amus College to the USSSA Boys Football Championship. He will be assisted by Richard Kansole and Hakim Ssenkumba, with Tumusime Zzaga appointed goalkeeping coach. Nicholas Ssengoba joins as team doctor, while John Bosco Lubyayi Sseguya takes on the role of team manager.

Despite their decorated history, Mawokota have endured a 13-year drought since their last triumph in 2013, when Farouk Miya’s solitary strike sealed a 1-0 win over Ssingo in the final. Their earlier titles came in 2005 and 2007, cementing their status among Buganda football’s elite.

The 2026 campaign begins on June 21 against Kyaggwe at Buwama Playgrounds, a stern opening test against Ronald Ssali’s side. Mawokota have been drawn in the Masengere Group alongside record champions Gomba Lions, three-time winners Bulemeezi, 2022 champions Busiro, and Ssese.

With an experienced technical bench and renewed ambition, supporters will hope Malinga can finally deliver a fourth crown and end more than a decade of waiting.

The Masaza Cup 2026 journey officially began with the tournament draws conducted at Bulange, confirming groups and fixtures for this year’s edition.

Buweekula will host Kyaddondo in the opening match on 13 June 2026, a fixture expected to set the tone for another fiercely contested campaign.

Officials also unveiled new rules and regulations, emphasizing early preparations. Rule 4.9 on player registration sets a strict timeframe before kickoff.

– 4.9.1: All registration issues must be submitted to the committee for observation.
– 4.9.2: Once the timeframe closes and the committee has reviewed, no team may lodge complaints against another.

The group stage promises thrilling clashes across three pools:

BULANGE GROUP
– Buweekula
– Buvuma
– Buddu
– Kyaddondo
– Busujju
– Buluuli

MUGANZIRWAZZA GROUP
– Ssingo
– Mawogola
– Butambala
– Kabula
– Kooki
– Bugerere

MASENGERE GROUP
– Kyaggwe
– Busiro
– Bulemeezi
– Gomba
– Ssese
– Mawokota

The Masaza Cup remains one of Buganda Kingdom’s biggest cultural and sporting events, blending football, tradition, and community pride.

With the draws complete, counties now turn focus to preparations as they plot their path to glory in the 2026 edition.
