The inaugural President’s Cup concluded on Friday at the par-72 Lake Victoria Serena Golf Course in Kigo, with Joseph Cwinya-ai and Peace Kabasweka claiming the men’s and women’s titles respectively.

Played in an individual match play format, the tournament — staged in honour of the current and former Uganda Golf Union presidents — attracted over 50 golfers who battled wet conditions across three competitive days.

National team captain Joseph Cwinya-ai produced a dominant performance to secure the men’s title. After defeating Reagan Akena in the semi-finals at the 15th hole, Cwinyaai advanced to face Andrew Ssekibejja in the final.

Ssekibejja had progressed to the final by walkover after Titus Okwong was unable to participate in their semi-final encounter. Cwinyaai maintained his composure in the final, closing out the match with victory at the 16th hole to lift the prestigious trophy.

On the women’s side, Peace Kabasweka continued her strong form, defeating Meron Kyomugisha in the final.

Kabasweka sealed the match at the 16th hole, capping a consistent tournament in which she had earlier knocked out Gloria Mbagutta in the semi-finals.

Speaking earlier in the tournament, both Cwinyaai and Kabasweka highlighted the importance of the President’s Cup in providing valuable competition experience, especially following Uganda’s recent success over Kenya at the Victoria Cup.

The winners walked away with UGX 6 million and UGX 2 million cash prizes for the men’s and women’s categories respectively.

Uganda national golf team captain Joseph Cwinya-ai is through to the semi-finals of the inaugural President’s Cup and will face Joseph Reagan Akena in what promises to be a high-stakes encounter at the Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa course.

Cwinya-ai, who has impressed throughout the tournament, believes mental strength and strategic play have been key to his progress so far.

“The tournament so far has been good. I’ve had good games. I’ve been able to play around with the mentality of my opponents and this has helped me win games,” he said.

As one of Uganda’s most experienced players, Cwinya-ai is using the President’s Cup not only to compete but also to refine his overall performance.

“I’m using the tournament to improve different aspects of my game as a player,” he added.

He also credited the Uganda Golf Union for creating a platform that has boosted local competition and sharpened players’ match-play skills.

“I thank the Uganda Golf Union for organising this match play. It’s very helpful for us, especially that we have come from victory in the Victoria Cup where we beat our neighbours Kenya,” Cwinya-ai noted.

Cwinya-ai will be aiming to add another accolade to his name as he pursues a place in the final and a shot at the top prize.

Titus Okwong is through to the semi-finals of the inaugural President’s Cup after an emphatic win over Godfrey Kambale in the quarter-final stage at the par 72 Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa course.

Okwong will now face Andrew Ssekibejja in Friday’s semi-final as he seeks a place in the final and a shot at the UGX 6 million winner’s prize.

“Today was a good day. I faced Kambale from Entebbe Golf Club. He gave me a run for my money the first couple of holes and pushed me all the way,” Okwong said.

The momentum swung in Okwong’s favour midway through the round following a turning point on the eighth hole.

“In the eighth hole, he breached a rule and somehow lost his stamina. That enabled me to beat him six holes in a row,” he added.

Looking ahead, Okwong says he is mentally and physically ready for the challenge.

“I’m charged and motivated to go for it tomorrow and win the ultimate prize,” he stated.

In the other men’s semi-final, Joseph Reagan Akena will take on Joseph Cwinyaai. Meanwhile, the women’s final will see Peace Kabasweka face Meron Kyomugisha in the championship match.

The three-day tournament will see the top 16 men and top 8 women advance to Thursday’s second round, with the final round scheduled for Friday.

The event is aimed at celebrating both past and current Uganda Golf Union (UGU) presidents, while also providing a platform for amateur golfers to earn national ranking points on the par-72 lakeside course.

Despite challenging wet conditions, 12 women and 38 men took part in Wednesday’s opening round, battling for spots in the next stage.

UGU vice-president Anthony Agaba emphasized the tournament’s dual purpose—honouring leadership and identifying new talent.

“This event is crucial for talent identification, but more importantly, it’s about celebrating the leaders who have significantly contributed to the growth of golf in Uganda,” Agaba said.

Notable participants include reigning Uganda amateur champion Reagan Akena, Joseph Cwinyaai, Titus Okwong, and Peace Kabasweka, among others.

More than 50 golfers began their pursuit of ranking points and cash prizes on Wednesday, as the inaugural President’s Cup teed off at the par-72 Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort in Kigo.

The three-day stroke play tournament, organized to honor past and present Uganda Golf Union (UGU) presidents, has drawn 38 men and 12 women competitors.

Despite wet conditions, all registered golfers took to the course on day one, vying for a place in Thursday’s second round.

According to the competition format, the top 16 male golfers and the top 8 female players from the opening round will qualify for the second day, with the final set for Friday.

“This tournament is important not only for celebrating our leaders, but also for identifying and nurturing golf talent in the country,” said Uganda Golf Union vice-president Anthony Agaba. He noted that the event is part of broader efforts to strengthen the amateur golfing circuit.

Among the field are some of Uganda’s top names, including national champion Reagan Akena, Joseph Cwinyaai, Titus Okwong, and Peace Kabasweka, who are all expected to challenge for top honors over the next two days.

The President’s Cup is intended to become a regular fixture on the local golf calendar, offering a platform for amateur golfers to improve their game and gain competitive exposure.
