For the rugby fraternity in Uganda, Saturday was the day when the past and the future sat at the same table to have a conversation.

This was at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, where the vibrant community conversed and enjoyed rugby under the floodlights.

On one hand, looking at the future, the national schools rugby setup fielded two U20 men’s teams in an exhibition match as the union attempts to jumpstart the age-grade program.

This match saw youngsters from reserve clubs and local schools showcase their skills for a possible national team call-up in the near future.

On the other hand, revisiting the past, former Rugby Cranes and Lady Rugby Cranes internationals, veterans and their still-active senior colleagues played two matches against Tritons Rugby Franchise touring from the United Kingdom alongside former Kenya Rugby Lionesses.

The men played a rather underwhelming match, dominated by the younger and still-active rugby players. But the veterans and seniors picked a few moments where they rewound time to their youthful days of the 2000s.

Uganda Rugby Legends beat Tritons by 36-12 to stay unbeaten in this tour for the second successive year.

The women’s match was such an amazing and historic event.

First, because it was the first assembly of its kind of former Lady Rugby Cranes internationals to come together and play rugby. Most in the stands had not seen most on the pitch even touch a rugby ball yet they once won championships for Uganda in the early 2000s.

Secondly, it was played under floodlights; an experience Uganda hadn’t had for a while. It left rugby folk yearning for more during the competitive season.

Full Results of Matches on the 2025 Tritons Tour:
• U20 Men: Team Black 27-23 Team Red
• Men: Uganda Legends 36-12 Tritons
• Women: Uganda Legends 10-10 Tritons

In addition to the rugby, the Tritons enjoyed their second tour of Uganda — with some members reported to have trekked to see mountain gorillas in Bwindi and others tubing on the Nile river in Jinja.

Although the United Kingdom’s Tritons Rugby franchise is on tour in Uganda for the second time this year, 2025’s tour is set to make history.

For the first time ever, a women’s match, between the Tritons Women’s team and the Uganda Women’s Rugby Legends, will headline the tour. This is the first assembly of its kind of former women rugby players in Uganda, following in the footsteps of their male counterparts.

The Uganda Women Rugby Legends team comprises ex-internationals who represented the country on the global stage from the early 2000s to the mid-2010s.

Choosing this as the headline match of the tour is a decision made to bring former women’s rugby players back together after decades apart and to celebrate recent achievements by the current crop of players.

“The timing of the Tritons Tour couldn’t be better, coming right after the Lady Cranes’ bronze medal at the Africa Women’s Sevens in Nairobi. We’re keen to bring our retired women players back into the fold and are already planning a combined men’s and women’s tour to the UK in 2026,” said Ebrahim Nyango, Chairperson of the Uganda Rugby Legends.

Similarly, the Tritons is a star-studded team with a mix of former rugby players from the United Kingdom and Kenya Lionesses. Tritons will be captained by former Red Roses and Harlequins prop Shaunagh Brown.

“This tour is about more than just rugby. We’re bringing together people who love the game and giving them the chance to discover East Africa, not as tourists, but as teammates. Sport has a unique power to connect people, and this tour is all about using that connection to build friendships across cultures and borders,” said Tony Dunkerley, Director of Tritons Sports Tours.

The match will be played at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, on Saturday, November 22. It will kick off at 6 p.m. and will be played under the floodlights.

Two men’s matches; one between two Uganda U20 select sides and another pitting the Uganda Rugby Legends against the Tritons, will serve as curtain-raisers from 2 p.m.

The tour organisers have made it a free-entry event with a promise of adequate security throughout.

For those unable to make it to Namboole on Saturday, Next Media will broadcast all the action on NBS SPORT and NBS SPORT 2.
