Test Series and Vitality Nations Cup to raise She Cranes’ Global Ranking

Uganda is gearing up for the netball test series against Wales from January 10th to 13th and the Vitality Nations Cup scheduled for January 20 -28th against England, New Zealand, and Australia.

A team of 11 local-based players and five officials departed for the United Kingdom on Saturday 6th January and will be joined by England-based shooting duo Hanisha Mohamed and Mary Nuba and team assistant coach Peace Proscovia upon arrival.

These upcoming games are crucial for Uganda, offering them a chance to reclaim a top-six position in the global netball rankings. After missing fixtures at the Africa Netball Championships due to funding challenges and dropping to seventh place in the world rankings in November 2023, the She Cranes are determined to bounce back.

Expressing the team’s aspirations, Fred Mugerwa stated, “I want to regain my position in the top six of the world. That’s the purpose of these games. I have chosen the best girls for the job, and I am sure we will achieve it. I want to be able to play in the Fast Five tournament again.”

A team of 11 local-based players and five officials was ceremoniously flagged off on January 5th at the Cooper Chimney restaurant in Lugogo by the state minister for Sport, Peter Ogwang, flanked by NCS Chairperson Ambrose Tashobya, NCS General Secretary Bernard Patrick Ogwel and UOC President Donald Rukare.

Ogwang commended the Normalization Committee for their efforts, emphasizing that netball is a priority sport. He assured continued support stating, “We have supported them in terms of allowances, which they will be paid before they leave for England. Netball is a priority sport, and we shall do all it takes to make it remain a priority both nationally and internationally.”
