Philip Wokorach and Nobert Okeny return to the sevens squad, adding depth and experience to Uganda’s rugby prowess. The France international, representing Avenir Sportif de Bédarrides Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vaucluse Rugby, is poised to showcase his skills on the international stage once more. Wokorach’s last appearance for the Uganda rugby 7’s was in September 2023 at the Rugby Men’s Africa Cup in Harare, Zimbabwe, where Uganda secured a commendable 3rd place. Head Coach Tolbert Onyango shares his thoughts on Wokorach’s return.
“The two players bring invaluable experience to the team. Philip, undoubtedly the most seasoned among them, has been a part of our journey for quite some time. We’ll rely on his expertise to lead the team and inject the necessary energy as we strive for the finals, which is our ultimate goal.”
Wokorach’s presence on the field is formidable, with his pace and physicality posing a challenge to opponents. Speaking about his return, Wokorach emphasizes his commitment to giving his best for the team’s success.
“Consistently striving to give my best and contribute to the team’s success is just second nature to me,” explains Philip Wokorach. “Whether it’s on the field or off, I’m dedicated to doing whatever it takes to help positively. That’s my commitment, and I’m determined to uphold it every step of the way.”
In tandem with Wokorach’s return, Nobert Okeny rejoins the squad after missing the Dubai series due to an injury scare. Coach Tolbert Onyango expresses confidence in Okeny’s recovery and his potential to make a significant impact.
“Norbert’s absence in the previous matches was due to an injury, and at that time, he had just initiated his recovery process. After thorough rehabilitation, we’re confident in his readiness to represent Uganda. His inclusion in the squad is well-deserved, and we look to him to provide the pace and vision in midfield that can propel us to the finals.
With the final traveling squad announced, consisting of Ian Munyani, Alex Aturinda, Desire Ayera, Pius Ogena, Philip Wokorach, Isaac Massanganzira, Adrian Kasito, Aaron Ofoyrwoth, Timothy Kisiga, Norbert Okeny, Denis Etwau, and Timothy Mugisha, Uganda’s rugby sevens team prepares to embark on a journey of excellence. Their upcoming challenges include the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Challenger series in Montevideo, Uruguay, from the 8th to the 10th of March, followed by the All African Games in Ghana. As they gear up for these competitions, Wokorach, Okeny, and their teammates stand united in their pursuit of victory, ready to showcase the true spirit of Ugandan rugby resilience, passion, and unwavering determination.
