President Ruto has inaugurated the construction of Talanta Sports City, a key venue slated to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The 36th edition of the biennial African football tournament, AFCON 2027, is scheduled to be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda in June and July 2027, following a successful joint bid by the three East African nations.
Addressing attendees at the groundbreaking ceremony, President Ruto reaffirmed his government’s dedication to nurturing sporting talent among the youth.
“We are committed to providing our youth with platforms to nurture their talents and skills,” he declared, emphasizing the significance of the ongoing infrastructure upgrades.
“The ongoing enhancement of our facilities will position Kenya as a global sports powerhouse and ensure that the 2027 AFCON is an unforgettable event,” he added.
Talanta Sports City, boasting a capacity of 60,000 seats, will feature standard athletics tracks, a football field, and a shared rugby field. Construction is scheduled for completion by December 2025.
Meanwhile, Uganda has identified the Akii Bua Olympic Stadium, along with new stadiums in Garuga, Hoima, and Lira City (yet to be constructed), as potential venues for the tournament. Additionally, renovations at the Mandela National Stadium are nearing completion ahead of the 2027 event.
In Tanzania, the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium has been designated as the primary facility, with plans underway to enhance the CCM Kirumba Stadium and Chamazi Sports Complex.
