Uganda Rugby Union Appeals to Parliament for Funding to Host Africa Cup

The Uganda Rugby Union has made an appeal to Parliament for financial support to successfully host the upcoming Africa Cup rugby tournament. In a motion moved by Hon. Andrew Oulanya Ojok and unanimously adopted by the entire House, the Union outlined the significant funding needed to ensure the smooth execution of the tournament, scheduled for July 18th to 29th, 2024, in Kampala.

The motion highlighted the estimated budget of UGX 2,546,276,000 required to cover various essential expenses, including accommodation, security, transport, medical services, venue preparation, facilitation for officials, and liaison officers, among other incidental costs.

In his address to the Parliament, Hon. Ojok emphasized the importance of securing adequate funding to showcase Uganda’s hospitality, cultural diversity, and tourism potential to the world. He underscored the significant role the Africa Cup plays not only in promoting rugby but also in attracting tourists and boosting the country’s economy.

The Uganda Rugby Union also said they plan to leverage existing infrastructure and home advantage to not only lift the Africa Cup but also qualify for the Rugby World Cup in 2027. The Union highlighted strategic partnerships with rugby clubs in South Africa and the establishment of high-altitude training facilities as part of their comprehensive plan for success.

With the motion forwarded to the Executive for further action, the Uganda Rugby Union remains optimistic about receiving the necessary support from the government to ensure the successful hosting of the Africa Cup.
