FUFA Proposes Teaching Coaches in Local Languages

During the FUFA Exco tour in Masaka region, Ronnie Kalema, the FUFA Executive Secretary in charge of Football Development, revealed that the football governing body is in plans to introduce coaching lessons in local languages.

Kalema emphasized the importance of linguistic familiarity in coaching stating: “When someone is coaching in the Buganda region, for example, they are using Luganda to coach. Why then must we teach them how to coach in English?”

Football scholar Raymond Siebetcheu highlighted the significance of linguistic context in effective communication within football.

In his paper, “From Sociolinguistics to Language Teaching in Football,” Siebetcheu argues that coaches who can communicate in the local language establish stronger connections with players, convey tactical instructions more clearly, and ultimately foster trust and cohesion within the team.

FUFA say the program is in the pipeline and will be rolled-out in due course.
