Uganda Cranes’ 1-0 victory over Botswana in their World Cup qualifier at the Mandela National Stadium on Friday was marked by the impressive debut of a new defensive sensation, Ellio Capradossi.
The 28-year-old defender, who recently opted to represent Uganda, his country of birth, has been the talk of the town after his commanding performance at the heart of the Cranes’ backline.
Capradossi, who played alongside veteran Halidi Lwaliwa, was a rock at the back, showcasing his exceptional composure on the ball, sharp anticipation, and decisive tackling.
His ability to effortlessly bring the ball out from defense and initiate attacking moves left many spectators in awe, drawing comparisons to the likes of William Saliba and John Stones.
Not since likes of Ibrahim Sekagya or Timothy Batabaire, has a Ugandan defender looked this assured in possession, good passing, quick decision-maker, and sharp in anticipation.
Capradossi’s performance on his Uganda Cranes debut was truly impressive. But who is this defender that everyone is talking about?
Despite his impressive performances for the Italy youth teams, from U14 to U21, Capradossi has now chosen to represent the country of his birth, Uganda, and his decision has been met with excitement and anticipation among Cranes supporters.
His journey to the Ugandan national team has been an intriguing one. Born in Uganda to an Italian father and Congolese mother, Capradossi moved to Italy at the age of two.
While growing up in Italy, he came through the youth ranks of Italian giants AS Roma, winning the Italian U19 Championship as the squad captain in 2015-16.
After spells on loan at Bari and Spezia, the 1.85m tall defender made his Serie A debut for Roma in 2018 and has since plied his trade in Italy’s top two divisions, including a recent stint at Cagliari.
This year, Capradossi joined Calcio Lecco, an Italian side that has since been relegated to Serie C, but hasn’t yet made any appearances for them.
As Uganda Cranes takes on Algeria at Namboole on Monday, 10th June, all ayes will be glued on Ellio Capradossi. Will he replicate Friday’s performance?
