The Buganda Masaza Cup organizing committee has officially announced the commencement of the 2024 tournament, set to begin on June 22. This highly anticipated tournament celebrates Buganda’s rich cultural heritage and promotes community unity through sports.
The Buganda Masaza Cup features teams named after their respective “Masaza” (counties), with a format that includes knockout rounds, semi-finals, and a final match to crown the champion. This year, the defending champions Bulemeezi will host the opening game against Bululi at the Kosovo Playground in Luwero.
The tournament, which will run until October 26, 2024, includes 18 teams divided into two groups: Bulange and Masengere. Teams in the Bulange group include Bulemeezi, Buddu, Kyadondo, Buluuli, Butambala, and Bugerere. The Masengere group features Mawokota, Buvuma, Kabula, Busujju, Ssese, and Busiro.
Last year, Bulemeezi emerged victorious with a narrow 1-0 win over five-time champions Gomba in the final held at Muteesa II Stadium in Wankulukuku, preventing Gomba from securing their sixth title.
Each team will use different playgrounds as their home venues, including Magyo for Buvuma, Ntenjeru for Bugerere, Lugazi-Najjembe and Bishop SS Mukono for Kyaggwe, Kakogge for Buluuli, Kasana for Bulemeezi, Mubende PTC for Buwekula, and Sports Arena Kitovu for Buddu.
Other venues include Lutoboka Playground for Ssese, Kibibi Secondary for Butambala, Kabulasoke Playground for Gomba, Mawogola Ssaza Ground for Mawogola, Lyantonde for Kabula, Rakai PTC and St. James-Kyotera for Kooki, Buwama Playground for Mawokota, Homsidallen Gayaza for Kyadondo, Ssentema for Busiro, Mityana Ssaza Ground for Ssingo, and Kakindu Parish for Busujju.
