EURO 2024: Scotland Earn Hard-Fought Point Against Switzerland to Keep Hopes Alive

Scotland’s EURO 2024 campaign is back on track after a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Switzerland in a tense encounter at the Cologne Stadium on Wednesday, June 19th.

Determined to bounce back from their heavy defeat to Germany, Steve Clarke’s side got off to the perfect start when Scott McTominay’s shot deflected off Fabian Schar to give the Scots a 13th-minute lead.

However, the joy was short-lived as Xherdan Shaqiri punished a mistake by Anthony Ralston to level the scores with a superb first-time strike just 13 minutes later.

Scotland were forced to work tirelessly to contain a Swiss side brimming with experience and creativity, with Angus Gunn producing several crucial saves to keep his side in the contest.

The Scots nearly regained the lead in the second half when Grant Hanley’s header hit the post, but a point was ultimately a fair result in a game that was a back-back affair throughout.

The result means Germany remain top of Group A with six points, while Switzerland sit second with four points. Scotland, who are still seeking their first European Championship win since 1996, have one point ahead of their final group game against the winless Hungary.

A win by Scotland against Hungary on Sunday, June 23rd could prove to be vital for their knockout stage qualification if Switzerland lose against hosts Germany on the same day.
