In a match that had it all, Austria pulled off a stunning 3-2 victory over the Netherlands to emerge as Group D dark horses, beating favourites France and the Dutch in securing the group’s top spot at EURO 2024.
The Austrians put up a five-star performance at the Olympiastadion on Tuesday, June 25th, to emerge victorious against the Dutch, with Marcel Sabitzer’s late strike sealing a famous win that sent shockwaves through the tournament.
The match began at a fast pace, with Austria taking the game to their more fancied opponents right from the start. Their high-pressing tactics paid dividends early on, as Alexander Prass’ cross was inadvertently diverted into his net by Donyell Malen to give the Austrians a deserved lead just after 6 minutes.
Despite falling behind, the Netherlands soon found their groove, with Tijjani Reijnders and Malen both going close to equalising. However, it was Austria who continued to look the more dangerous, but Marko Arnautovic was unable to capitalise on a loose ball in the box before the break. The first half ended 1-0 in favour of the Austrians.
The second half was a mouthwatering and exciting encounter, with the Dutch coming out of the traps quickly and drawing level through a superb Cody Gakpo 47th-minute strike.
But just as Ronald Koeman’s side were beginning to assert their authority, Austria struck back, Romano Schmid powering home a header to restore their advantage in the 59th minute.
The see-saw nature of the contest continued, as Memphis Depay’s exquisite volley brought the Netherlands back on level terms once again just 16 minutes later.
Just when it seemed the points would be shared, up popped man of the match Marcel Sabitzer to hammer home the winner with 10 minutes of normal time left, and send the Austrian fans into raptures.
The game was a display of resilience and sheer determination by Austria, and Rangnick’s men refused to be cowed by their more illustrious opponents, showing the kind of character and tactical acumen that has made them the surprise package of Group D.
With France also dropping points against Poland, Austria’s triumph means they finish top of the group, setting up a tantalizing round of 16 clash against the runners-up of Group F on Tuesday, 2nd July.
Meanwhile, the Netherlands, despite their star-studded lineup, will have to settle for a potentially tricky third-place finish and a potential showdown with England.
This victory will undoubtedly go down as one of the greatest nights in Austrian football history. Rangnick and his players have defied the odds so far, emerging as the dark horses of Group D, and proving that they are a force to be reckoned with.
