The Uganda Rugby Cranes 7s have solidified their dominance in African rugby by winning their record fourth Africa Men’s 7s title.
The team clinched the championship with a thrilling victory over South Africa on Sunday, July 7th, edging them out 20-17 in a hard-fought final at the Labourdonnais Sports Club in Mauritius.
The triumph in the final followed a decisive 24-7 win against Zimbabwe in the semi-finals earlier in the day.
This victory ensured Uganda’s place at the top of the tournament standings, having accumulated a total of 38 points over two rounds, more than any other contender could achieve.
Uganda’s path to the title was marked by an unbeaten streak over two weekends of intense competition against Africa’s elite teams.
The Rugby Cranes showcased their exceptional form and resilience in the first round to secure the maximum possible twenty points from the round on June 30th by defeating Madagascar in the final.
They did the same in the second round by securing all victories to maintain their place at the top of the standings with twenty more points.
With this latest win, the Rugby Cranes 7s have not only claimed the Africa Men’s 7s title for the fourth time in their history but have also secured a coveted spot in the 2025 Challenger Series.
This series serves as a pathway to the prestigious 7s World Series, representing a significant opportunity for further advancement on the global stage.
Coach Tolbert Onyango and standout players like Adrian Kasito, Philip Wokorach, and Aaron Ofoywroth, the MVP of the second round, have been instrumental in the team’s success.
The 2024 Africa Men’s 7s title is the second African title for Uganda in three years, having won the 2022 crown. The Uganda Rugby Cranes also won the 2016 and 2017 titles.
The triumph now means that the Uganda Rugby Cranes are the record champions on the continent, with one more title than Zimbabwe, who won the 2000, 2012 and 2018 trophies.
