Maroons Football Club’s latest signing Ivan Asaba has expressed his excitement and high hopes for his debut season in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League.
In the exclusive interview with NBS Sport, Asaba expressed his excitement about playing in the country’s top tier league for the first time, stating, “It’s going to be my first time to play in the Uganda Premier League and I’m very excited.”
He also shared his targets for the upcoming season, saying, “My target for a team like Maroons is to win trophies, to achieve goals as a team, and to use the club as a step of going professional.”
“I expect to help the team finish in better a position than what it finished in last season, to help the team move forward, and not be relegated to the big league,” he added.
“I also expect get more playing time at Maroons, gain individual achievements and also go back to the national team, ” he added.
Asaba first made his mark as a young player at KCCA and later with the Vipers Junior team.
His impressive performances at the youth level earned him call-ups to the Uganda national U-17 and U-20 teams, where he played a crucial role in the team’s successes, including winning the CECAFA championship with the U-17 team in 2020.
The 21-year old promising player also addressed the challenges he faced at Vipers, where, after joining the senior team, hardly got any playing time, and how he dealt with them.
“As a young player, that pressure got to me sometimes, but I kept believing in myself, had self-confidence. I had to accept that things are not working out, but I’m still a good player,” he said.
Now, with a fresh start at Maroons, Asaba is eager to prove his worth and help the team achieve its goals.
“What I can promise Maroons fans is that we shall have a better season and finish in a better position than last season, and all in all, I promise to bring joy to them as fans,” he said.
Asaba signed a two-year contract with Maroons, and he hopes to have the opportunity to showcase his skills and fulfill the promise that has long been associated with his name.
