The Super Falcons recorded their third defeat in as many matches at the ongoing Women’s Olympic Football Tournament at Paris 2024, following a 3-1 loss to Japan on Wednesday evening.
With earlier defeats against Brazil and Spain, Nigeria’s chances of progressing to the knockout stages were slim.
Despite the backing of an expectant crowd at Nantes Stadium, the Super Falcons struggled to find their rhythm, allowing Japan to capitalize on their shortcomings and end their Paris 2024 journey.
Japan opened the scoring through Maika Hamano in the 22nd minute, followed by an extension from Mina Tanaka just minutes later. Jennifer Echegini ignited a bit of hope for the West Africans, but this was dashed in stoppage time when Kitagawa Hakaru scored, sealing the 3-1 victory for Japan.
This result officially concludes Nigeria’s Olympic Football campaign, marking an unfortunate end to their Paris 2024 adventure.
