As Uganda Cranes prepare to face South Sudan in the second leg of the AFCON 2025 qualifiers, Hon. Peter Ogwang, the State Minister for Sports, has issued a rallying cry for the team to secure victory and punch their ticket to the tournament finals in Morocco.
Speaking to the players ahead of the high-stakes match, Ogwang emphasized the importance of the game, both on and off the field.
“I need one more win. The Juba win is all I ask for,” Ogwang declared, underlining the significance of the match that could see Uganda qualify for AFCON 2025.
Beyond the sporting context, Ogwang highlighted the deep ties between Uganda and South Sudan, reflecting on the historical relationship between the two nations.
“Uganda has a lot of history in South Sudan. We were part of the process that led to the independence of South Sudan. This is more than just a game,” he said.
The Minister also noted the personal connections many South Sudanese players have with Uganda, with some even playing in the Ugandan domestic league.
“Many of the South Sudan players are our children. Some even play in our local league,” he remarked.
Ogwang reassured the Cranes of continued government support, encouraging the team to make the work of the football federation easier by delivering results on the pitch.
“The message from the government is simple. We shall continue to fund the national team. Now make the work of the Federation easier by producing results,” he urged.
He further announced that he will personally travel to Juba to cheer on the team, alongside a sizable community of Ugandans based in South Sudan.
“I will personally be in Juba to cheer for the team. We also have a big community of Ugandans in Juba who will turn up to cheer on the team. Believe in yourselves and get that win,” he said.
The match, set for 4 PM East Africa Time on Tuesday October 15, could see Uganda secure their place in the AFCON 2025 finals with a win, following their 1-0 victory in the first leg in Kampala.
