Former Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy has been awarded the majority of his £11 million claim for unpaid wages against his former club.
Mendy, 30, successfully argued that City had wrongfully withheld his £500,000-a-month salary after he was charged with sexual offenses in 2021.
The club’s decision to suspend his pay was deemed excessive by an employment tribunal.
The tribunal recognized City’s right to withhold Mendy’s wages while he was in custody due to breaches of bail conditions as the judge determined that Mendy’s suspension by the Football Association (FA) was a significant factor preventing him from fulfilling his contractual obligations.
The tribunal, however, found that Mendy’s contract with City did not include provisions allowing for wage withholding in cases of FA suspensions or bail conditions.
While the exact amount Mendy will receive is still to be determined, this ruling represents a significant victory for the player.
