She Cranes goalkeeper Haniisha Muhameed was brimming with pride after Uganda’s impressive performance at the Fast5 Netball World Series in New Zealand, where the team clinched a bronze medal.
Despite being the tournament’s lowest-ranked team, the She Cranes achieved their best finish ever in Fast5 competition, underscoring their growing strength on the world stage.
“This honestly means the world to all of us,” Muhameed shared in a post-match interview with World Netball.
“I know we faced setbacks, but adversity is part of the game, and I’m incredibly proud of the girls for pushing through.”
In a nail-biting third-place playoff, Uganda avenged an earlier loss to South Africa with a 46-42 victory.
Reflecting on the rematch, Muhameed highlighted the team’s shift in energy and mindset.
“I think we had terrible energy in the morning, but this time, it was different, everyone was confident, and our shots were landing. That was the difference,” she explained.
For Muhameed and her teammates, the bronze finish is a milestone achievement. In 2022, Uganda finished fifth in their Fast5 debut.
Now, with a higher finish, the She Cranes have firmly established themselves among the elite in global netball.
Muhameed is hopeful that this success will bring much-needed recognition and support to the sport. “We are such a good team, a force to reckon with, and I’m really proud of the girls,” she said.
“I think it’s time everybody understands that we are the biggest sport in Uganda and deserve every good thing.”
Despite facing significant challenges, Muhameed believes the She Cranes represent a powerful force for Ugandan sports on the international stage.
She called for greater support, urging fans beyond netball to rally behind the team.
Muhameed also expressed appreciation for the vibrant fan support in New Zealand, noting how an electric atmosphere amplified their performance.
Her comments underline an important message: netball in Uganda is not only thriving but deserves more recognition and investment to continue its remarkable growth and impact.
