Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed they will appeal the seven-game ban imposed on midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur for a racist remark made about teammate Son Heung-min.
The Uruguayan was found guilty by an independent regulatory commission of breaching FA Rule E3.1.
The ban, which includes six Premier League matches and one League Cup tie, was handed down earlier this week, along with a £100,000 fine.
While Spurs accept the guilty verdict, they believe the length of the ban is excessive. The club’s statement reads: “We believe the subsequent sanction is severe.”
If the appeal is successful, Bentancur could potentially be available for Tottenham’s crucial Premier League clash against Liverpool on December 22nd.
However, even if the appeal is upheld, the midfielder will still serve a significant portion of the ban.
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has previously expressed understanding for Bentancur’s mistake, emphasizing the need for both punishment and rehabilitation.
The Australian manager highlighted the importance of learning from mistakes and fostering a more tolerant environment.
