The Ugandan government has committed $30 million (approximately UGX 113 billion) to facilitate preparations for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024.
This announcement was made by the State Minister in charge of Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, during a Local Organising Committee meeting on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at Silver Springs Hotel in Bugolobi, Kampala.
The funding, part of Uganda’s broader efforts to host a successful CHAN tournament, is earmarked for key areas such as stadium preparations, team logistics, and tournament infrastructure upgrades.
CHAN, which exclusively features players competing in their domestic leagues, is set to kick off on February 1, 2025.
The allocation will cover among others, essential logistics, including transportation, accommodation for teams and officials, and operational costs.
The funds are critical to ensuring Uganda meets the stringent requirements set by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Minister Ogwang reiterated the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability in managing these funds, warning against any mismanagement.
“As the government, we are the primary investors in this tournament. The $30 million will be spent under strict conditions to ensure every dollar benefits the tournament and our nation,” Ogwang said.
With less than two months to the tournament, preparations are in high gear to ensure all facilities are ready by February 1.
Uganda will co-host the tournament with Kenya and Uganda under the Pamoja Bid that also includes the hosting of the AFCON 2027 tournament.
