Butembe ended their six-year wait for glory by edging past Bukono 1-0 in a thrilling final of the 2024 MTN Busoga Masaza Cup on Sunday.
The victory at Bugembe Stadium, witnessed by a packed crowd including the Kyabazinga of Busoga, Ivan Nakalanda, secured Butembe’s second championship title in the tournament’s seven-year history.
Nakalanda’s early strike proved to be the difference-maker in a fiercely contested match. Despite a spirited second-half fightback from Bukono, Butembe’s defense, anchored by Jonathan Waisswa and Umaru Asirikwa, held firm to secure the victory.
“Much as we had a good first half, our attacking prowess was put to the test in the second half,” admitted Butembe head coach Bosco Mugerwa. “However, our team’s fighting spirit, inspired by our passionate supporters and patron Edrine Lufafa, carried us through.”
Bukono, despite creating several chances, were unable to capitalize. Coach Martin Amodoi lamented his team’s nervous start and missed opportunities.
“Much as we tried to make a late comeback, my game plan was derailed by our shaky start,” he said.
The tournament, which featured 12 teams, kicked off in August and showcased thrilling football action throughout. Bugabula secured third place, while Buzaya finished fourth. Bugabula’s Saidi Kazindula emerged as the tournament’s top scorer with seven goals.
The Deputy Minister of Sports for the Busoga Kingdom praised the tournament’s success, highlighting the impressive turnout as a testament to its growing popularity.
