Uganda’s Belinda Chemutai delivered an outstanding performance at the Cursa dels Nassos in Barcelona on Tuesday, securing a podium finish and smashing her personal best with a time of 14:36.
The World Athletics Label road race witnessed record-breaking moments, including Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet setting a new world 5km record with a remarkable 13:54.
Chemutai’s time earned her third place in the elite women’s race, behind Ethiopia’s Medina Eisa, who clocked 14:23.
The Ugandan athlete demonstrated resilience and determination throughout the race, holding her own in a field featuring some of the sport’s brightest stars.
Chemutai stayed with the leading pack, which included Chebet and Eisa, through the opening kilometre at a blistering 2:50 pace—well inside world record tempo.
She maintained a strong rhythm, ultimately shaving several seconds off her previous best to secure her place on the podium.
The race saw ideal conditions, with temperatures at 14°C and no wind.
Paced by Latvia’s Dmitrijs Sergojins, Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet dominated the field, becoming the first woman to break 14 minutes for the distance.
As the calendar turns to 2025, Uganda’s focus will likely shift to the World Championships in Tokyo, where athletes like Chemutai aim to translate their road-race performances into medal-winning success on the track.
