Buganda Unveils 2025 Sports Calendar, Badminton Makes Debut

Buganda Kingdom has officially launched its second edition of the 2025 Sports Calendar, a significant milestone marked by the inclusion of badminton for the first time.

The launch, held on January 13th, 2025, was presided over by Buganda’s Sports Minister, Sserwanga Ssalongo Robert, alongside esteemed guests.

Key Highlights of the 2025 Calendar

  • Gombolola Cup (March 19-30): Football, netball, and Mweso competitions will feature 4,375 participants from 175 sub-counties, with each sub-county fielding 56 players.
  • Buganda Schools Gala (March 13-16): A five-day event for primary and secondary schools, fostering young talent across the kingdom.
  • Kabaka’s Birthday Run (April 6): A beloved tradition celebrating the Kabaka’s 70th birthday, promoting fitness and unity.
  • Buganda Cycling Tours: Three tours are planned: Masaka (March 30), Kayunga, Bugerere (July 13), and Ring Road, Lubiri Mengo, Kyadondo (November 16), each featuring 432 riders covering 120 km.
  • Clan Competitions: Netball (April 12-19) and Football (May 19-31).
  • Kids Gala Under 12 (May 3-4): A platform for nurturing young talent.
  • Masaza Cup and Mweso Coronation Cup (July 2 – November 1): Celebrating the Kabaka’s 32nd year on the throne.
  • Coronation Golf and Rugby Cups: Golf (July 21-26) and Rugby (August 2-3).
  • Buganda Badminton Open (August 8-10): Held at the NCS Indoor Arena, marking the debut of badminton in Buganda’s sports activities.
  • Buganda Royal Regatta (August 23): A spectacular display of traditional water sports.

USSSA President Justus Mugisha emphasized the importance of aligning Buganda’s sports activities with national regulations.

He also committed to organizing training courses for teachers and sports officials to further strengthen the kingdom’s sports development.
