Manchester United have announced the signing of highly-rated left-back Patrick Dorgu from Serie A side Lecce for a fee of £29.4 million.
The 20-year-old Danish international becomes Ruben Amorim’s second signing as manager, bolstering the squad for their 3-4-3 system.
The transfer fee is structured as an initial payment of £25.2 million, with a further £4.2 million in potential add-ons. Dorgu has signed a contract that will keep him at Old Trafford until June 30, 2030, with an option for an additional year.
“I am incredibly proud to be able to call myself a Manchester United player; this is a very special day for my whole family,” said Dorgu. “I cannot wait to work with Ruben Amorim; his vision for this team and the future of the club is incredibly exciting. There is a clear plan set out for my development, and I feel that Manchester United is the perfect place to fulfil my potential and complete my huge ambitions.”
United’s technical director, Jason Wilcox, expressed his enthusiasm for the new signing.
“Patrick is a really exciting talent; his strong defensive and attacking attributes, adaptability and work-rate will make him a key part of Ruben Amorim’s squad,” Wilcox commented.
“Patrick has had a superb start to his career, and at the age of just 20, we know he will continue to develop under the guidance of our excellent coaching team.”
Dorgu’s arrival addresses a key area of concern for United, with injuries plaguing their left-back options this season.
Luke Shaw has been limited to minimal playing time, forcing Amorim to utilize Diogo Dalot in a makeshift role.
While Shaw has recently returned to training, the signing of Dorgu provides much-needed depth and competition for the position.
Dorgu has been a consistent presence for Lecce in their Serie A campaign, starting 21 of their 23 games this season.
His versatility is a valuable asset, having played in various positions for the Italian club, including left-back, right-winger, and even right-back.
While primarily expected to operate as a left wing-back at United, his adaptability offers Amorim tactical flexibility.
Despite Lecce’s precarious position just above the Serie A relegation zone, club president Damiani was unable to prevent the transfer.
Dorgu’s impressive performances, including three goals this season, have attracted significant attention, culminating in this move to Manchester United.
Dorgu’s career trajectory has been impressive. He progressed through the youth ranks at Husum Boldklub and Nordsjaelland before joining Lecce in 2022.
He made his senior debut in August 2023 and quickly established himself as a regular starter. His international career for Denmark has also taken off, debuting in September and already earning four caps.
