The 2024/25 season of the SMACK League roared to a dramatic conclusion this weekend, with Alks clinching the championship title after a nail-biting victory against the Knights.
A tense final match culminated in a dramatic goal from a throw-in during the dying minutes, securing a 1-0 win for Alks and earning them the coveted Champion’s Shield.
The league, sponsored by Guinness, witnessed a season of fierce competition and exhilarating football since its kickoff in July 2024.
The final showdown between Alks and the Knights proved to be a fitting end to the tournament, showcasing the passion and skill that have defined this year’s league.
While Alks celebrated their championship triumph, the Founder’s Cup final also delivered a spectacle. The Cyclones emerged victorious, defeating the Kiama Warriors 2-0, with Derrick Mbowa scoring the decisive goal.
The Cyclones’ dominant performance earned them a well-deserved title.
Beyond the thrilling matches, the SMACK League also took time to recognize individual and team excellence. Certificates of Excellence were awarded in various categories, highlighting the standout performers of the season.
Junior Nabongho of the Knights took home the Top Scorer award, while Ricky Mudali of the Vikings was named Best Coach.
Kitali Sharifah of Kiama earned the Best Female Player accolade, and the Pirates were recognized as the Best Online Team.
Several other categories also saw deserving recipients, celebrating the diverse talent within the league.
Reflecting on the league’s successful run, SMACK League Chairman Bernard Mukasa expressed his immense pride.
“This league has been nothing short of phenomenal,” he stated. “We have witnessed great talent, unity, and sportsmanship. It’s incredible to see how football continues to bring people together and the impact that we have had on the people who choose to be a part of this experience.”
Mercy Atwongeirwe, Project Manager at Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL), echoed Mukasa’s sentiments, emphasizing the league’s positive community impact.
“SMACK League has become a celebration of not just football but friendship and togetherness,” she commented. “Seeing the passion on and off the pitch is truly inspiring.”
Adding to the excitement, Premier League fans were treated to a special Match Day Experience, complete with live screenings on a giant screen courtesy of Guinness, the official beer of the world’s most-watched league.
Arsenal supporters were particularly ecstatic, erupting in cheers as they watched their team’s commanding 5-1 victory over Manchester City. The electric atmosphere further underscored the unifying power of football.
The celebrations continued into the night with captivating performances by Elijah Kitaka and A Ka Dope Band, providing a perfect finale to an unforgettable season.
