Atlético Madrid are reportedly considering a move for Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman as a potential replacement for veteran striker Antoine Griezmann, according to reports from Spanish and Nigerian media outlets.
The 33-year-old Griezmann, a key figure for Atlético over the past decade, has a contract expiring in 2026, but rumors suggest a possible move to Major League Soccer at the end of the 2024/2025 season.
Griezmann’s impact at the Wanda Metropolitano has been undeniable, with 196 goals and 90 assists in 423 appearances.
His potential departure would leave a significant void in Atlético’s attack, prompting the club to begin scouting for suitable replacements.
According to Fichajes, Atlético’s board, led by manager Diego Simeone, is prepared to make a significant investment in a forward capable of filling Griezmann’s shoes and forging a productive partnership with Julián Álvarez.
Their shortlist includes Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martínez, Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, and Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman.
Simeone’s primary target is reportedly Martínez, envisioning a dynamic Argentine attacking duo with Álvarez.
However, securing Martínez’s signature appears a daunting task. The Inter Milan star is under contract until 2029 and carries an estimated price tag of around €100 million, a figure Atlético might find prohibitive.
Isak, another highly sought-after striker, is also expected to command a similar fee, making him an expensive option for Atlético.
The Swedish forward has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, including Chelsea and Arsenal.
This leaves Lookman as the most attainable option, according to TransferFeed. The versatile Atalanta forward has impressed this season, scoring 14 goals and providing seven assists in 27 appearances, despite a current knee injury.
Valued at €55 million by Transfermarkt, Lookman represents a more financially viable alternative to Martínez and Isak. His contract with Atalanta expires in 2026, with an option for a one-year extension.
Lookman’s versatility and proven goal-scoring ability make him an attractive prospect for Atlético.
However, it remains to be seen whether the former RB Leipzig forward would be interested in a move to La Liga.
