Uganda Cranes captain Khalid Aucho lit up the Tanzania Premier League on Sunday with a stunning volley, helping Young Africans SC (Yanga) cruise to a commanding 5-0 victory over Mashujaa at the Lake Tanganyika Stadium in Kigoma.
Aucho’s brilliant strike came in the 55th minute when Ivorian playmaker Pacome Zouzoua floated in a perfectly weighted free-kick.
The Ugandan midfielder, positioned at the far post, connected with a powerful left-footed volley to score his first goal of the season; a moment that sparked wild celebrations from the Yanga faithful.
The goal was Aucho’s first since 2021, when he netted in Yanga’s 4-0 win against Dodoma.
It also marked his fifth goal in the past five years for both club and country, underlining the rare but impactful nature of his scoring contributions.
Yanga, already leading 2-0 before Aucho’s strike, had Harambee Stars midfielder Duke Abuya and Zimbabwean striker Prince Dube to thank for early goals that set the tone for the dominant display.
Abuya opened the scoring with a clinical finish before Dube doubled the lead, leaving Mashujaa reeling before halftime.
Clatous Chota Chama added a late brace, striking in the 74th and 83rd minutes, to complete the rout as Yanga reinforced their position at the summit of the Tanzania Premier League.
The victory extended Yanga’s lead atop the table to 55 points after 21 matches, with an impressive record of 18 wins, one draw, and just two losses.
Their closest rivals, Simba SC, who are home to Ugandan striker Steven Mukwala, sit five points behind on 50 points but with two games in hand.
Simba will have the chance to close that gap when they host Azam today, Monday, February 24.
