After months of delays, competitive athletics will finally return to Namboole Stadium, with the 1st National Trials set for Saturday March 1, 2025.
The trials mark the first track and field competition at the facility since it was closed for renovations, officially ushering Ugandan athletics back to its iconic home.
The event, organized by the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) as part of its centenary celebrations, aims to identify new talent and provide a platform for athletes to qualify for international championships.
Open to participants aged 16 and above, the trials offer a crucial opportunity for both emerging and experienced competitors to meet qualification standards for major global events.
This occasion was initially supposed to be preceded by the National Over Distance Meet on February 15, which was meant to be the first athletics competition at Namboole since its closure.
However, the event was postponed due to a scheduling conflict with the Vision Group Harvest Money Exposition, forcing athletes to wait a little longer before returning to the upgraded track.
Namboole Stadium has undergone significant renovations over the past four years.
The national athletics track was completed in September 2024, featuring a newly laid tartan surface.
The facility has also seen upgrades in seating, lighting, dressing rooms, and the VIP section.
Further renovations are planned, including the installation of a canopy around the stadium ahead of the 2027 AFCON which Uganda will co-host.
The return of athletics to Namboole is a major milestone, restoring the stadium’s role as the heart of Uganda’s track and field scene.
The national trials will be broadcast on NBS Sport starting at 8 AM.
