Kawempe Muslim WFC boosted their Finance Trust Bank Women Super League title defence hopes with a crucial 2-0 victory over Wakiso Hill at the Kawempe Muslim Grounds on Sunday.
The result propelled them to second place with 28 points from 14 matches, closing the gap on leaders Kampala Queens, who remain six points ahead after an equally commanding 2-0 win over She Corporate on Saturday.
From the onset, Kawempe Muslim signaled their intent, with Meble Adong heading in an early goal from Samalie Nakacwa’s pinpoint corner in the fifth minute.
The hosts pressed relentlessly, with Esther Nangendo missing key chances to widen the margin.
However, the breakthrough eventually came in the 35th minute when Jovia Nakagolo netted her first goal for the club, securing a comfortable lead before the break.
Wakiso Hill struggled to contain Kawempe’s attacking waves but showed resilience in defense.
Judith Mawuwa made a vital goal-line clearance to prevent further damage, while substitute goalkeeper Sarah Nakintu produced fine saves in the second half.
Despite a rare counter-attacking opportunity, Wakiso Hill failed to find the back of the net, leaving them rooted at the bottom of the table with just five points.
After the game, Nakagolo expressed delight at scoring her debut goal for Kawempe Muslim, promising more contributions in upcoming fixtures.
“I’m happy to have finally opened my goal account with Kawempe Muslim. I’ve been able to pick up the playing style, and I promise to score more goals for my team,” she said.
Kawempe head coach Ayub Khalifah, while pleased with the win, underlined the need for consistency in the title race.
He also voiced concerns over the national team’s refusal to release Agnes Nabukenya and Shadia Nabirye for the match, citing an imbalance in how foreign-based and local players are managed.
“It’s unfair that foreign-based players are allowed to join the national team late, but local players are denied a chance to play for their clubs when in camp,” Khalifa lamented.
Meanwhile, earlier on on Saturday, Kampala Queens continued their dominant march toward the title with a composed 2-0 win over She Corporate at the MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo.
Despite a goalless first half, they intensified their attacking approach after the break, breaking the deadlock in the 61st minute through a long-range stunner from Shamirah Nalugya.
Fourteen minutes later, Nalugya turned provider, delivering a well-placed corner that Jamirah Nabulime converted with a powerful header, sealing all three points for Kampala Queens.
