With International Women’s Day just days away, FIFA has turned its spotlight on the remarkable achievements of four female footballers who have etched their names into the annals of the sport, surpassing the extraordinary milestone of 300 international caps.
Kristine Lilly, Christine Sinclair, Carli Lloyd, and Christie Pearce Rampone, collectively known as the “300 Club,” represent the pinnacle of dedication, skill, and longevity in women’s international football.
These four icons, boasting over 1,300 international appearances and more than 450 goals, have not only redefined the standards of excellence but have also inspired generations of aspiring athletes.
Their combined trophy haul includes six FIFA Women’s World Cup™ titles and eight Olympic gold medals, a testament to their unparalleled dominance on the global stage.
Leading the pack with an astounding 354 international caps, Kristine Lilly stands as the undisputed world record holder. Her illustrious career, spanning four decades, began in 1987 while she was still in high school.
Just months later, she became the youngest player to score for the USWNT at 16 years and 22 days old, a record that remains unbroken. Lilly’s journey saw her participate in five FIFA Women’s World Cups, winning two, and three Olympic Games, earning two gold and one silver medal. Her 130 international goals place her fourth on the all-time list for the USWNT.
Following closely behind Lilly is Canada’s Christine Sinclair, who amassed 331 caps over a 23-year career. Sinclair also holds the world record for international goals, with 190, surpassing Abby Wambach’s previous record in 2020.
Her journey began at the 2002 FIFA Women’s U-20 World Cup, where she won the Golden Boot and Golden Ball. Sinclair competed in six FIFA Women’s World Cups and three Olympic Games, culminating in a gold medal at Tokyo 2020. Sinclair retired from international duty in 2023 and from club football in 2024.
Carli Lloyd, a two-time FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year, joins her fellow American, Lilly, in the 300 Club with 316 caps. Known for her clutch performances, Lloyd scored decisive goals in the 2008 and 2012 Olympic finals and delivered a stunning hat-trick in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup final. Her 134 goals rank her third on the USWNT’s all-time scoring list.
Christie Pearce Rampone: The Defensive Stalwart
Christie Pearce Rampone, with 311 caps, stands out as the defensive anchor of the 300 Club. Unlike her fellow members, Rampone’s legacy is built on her defensive prowess, earning her just four international goals.
She captained the USWNT to victory in the 1999 and 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cups and secured three consecutive Olympic gold medals. At 40 years and 11 days old, she became the oldest player to lift the Women’s World Cup trophy.
The impact of these four legends extends beyond their individual achievements. FIFA acknowledges the numerous other female players who have surpassed the 200-cap milestone, including USWNT icons Abby Wambach, Mia Hamm, Julie Foudy, Alex Morgan, and Becky Sauerbrunn.
European standouts like Sweden’s Caroline Seger, Germany’s Birgit Prinz, Denmark’s Katrine Pederson, and Italy’s Patrizia Panico, as well as global stars like Brazil’s Formiga and Japan’s Homare Sawa, have also made significant contributions to the sport.
Looking to the future, FIFA highlights the potential of players like France’s Eugenie Le Sommer, Romania’s Florentina Spanu, Sweden’s Kosovare Asllani, and Denmark’s Sanne Troelsgaard, who are nearing or surpassing the 200-cap mark.
