The Ugandan government has tabled a third supplementary budget for the 2024/25 financial year, seeking an additional UGX 4.255 trillion to fund critical national priorities, including preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The request was presented to Parliament on Tuesday, March 11, by Minister of State for Finance, Henry Musasizi.
Following his submission, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa referred the proposal to the Budget Committee for further scrutiny before a final parliamentary decision was made.
“I beg to lay the supplementary expenditure schedule No.3 for 2024/25, amounting to Shs4.255 trillion to cater for government commitments and obligations, which include the following critical expenditure requirements—outstanding certificates to road construction companies; security-related expenditure under the Ministry of Defence and Uganda Police Force; and African Cup of Nations 2027-related expenditure for completion of Hoima Stadium, construction of Akii-Bua Stadium, training facilities, and operational expenses in preparation for AFCON,” said Minister Musasizi as quoted by Parliamentary Watch.
According to the minister, this budget injection underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring Uganda is fully prepared to co-host AFCON 2027.
Key projects include the completion of Hoima Stadium, which is already under construction, as well as the development of Akii-Bua Stadium and additional training facilities to meet CAF’s tournament requirements.
Beyond sports infrastructure, the budget also seeks to address financial obligations to road construction contractors and reinforce security operations under the Uganda Police Force and Ministry of Defence.
The proposal is now in the hands of Parliament’s Budget Committee, whose findings will determine the next steps.
