The stage is set for another chapter in the longstanding rivalry between Uganda and Kenya as the national golf teams clash once again in the Victoria Cup.

The picturesque Mt Kipipiri Golf Resort in Naivasha will host this year’s edition, where defending champions Kenya will face a determined Ugandan side.

Last year’s tournament at Kitante Golf Club ended in a dramatic tie, leaving both nations eager to assert dominance this time around.

Uganda’s national team captain, Joseph Cwinya-ai, has expressed confidence in his squad, which includes an exciting mix of seasoned players and emerging talents.

The team features Joseph Reagan Akena, Elton Thembo, Titus Okwong, John Musiimenta, Abdul Kakeeto, Abdallah Kakooza, and junior golfers Peter Mayende, Anthony Otukei, and Ibrahim Ssemakula.

Cwinya-ai, alongside Akena and Okwong, is already competing in the Kenya Amateur Golf Series to acclimatize ahead of the three-day event, which tees off on March 20.

Speaking at the team’s flag-off at the NCS headquarters in Lugogo, acting assistant NCS general secretary Sarah Chelangat praised the players’ dedication and spirit.

“When I look in your eyes, I see talent, hunger, and a zeal to win. Go and perform to the best of your ability because I know all of you have what it takes to bring back the trophy,” Chelangat declared.

Government support has been integral, with all team expenses covered and the backing of Minister of Education and Sports, First Lady Janet Museveni.

Uganda Golf Union President Jackson Were also attended the flag-off, reflecting the high stakes and national pride associated with the tournament.

Team coach Flavia Namakula and manager Paul Habyarimana will accompany the players to Kipipiri, ensuring they are well-prepared for the contest. Cwinya-ai highlighted the team’s resolve, saying, “Kenya are familiar opponents, but we know we can match them punch-for-punch.”

With history, passion, and pride on the line, the Victoria Cup promises to deliver another enthralling battle between the two East African giants.
