Carlos Alcaraz continues his impressive title defense at the 2025 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, advancing to the quarterfinals for a third consecutive year.
However, the Spaniard remains cautious as he gears up to face the in-form Francisco Cerundolo on March 13 for a spot in the semifinals.
The two-time defending champion has displayed commanding form throughout the tournament, securing straight-set victories over Quentin Halys (6-4, 6-2), Denis Shapovalov (6-2, 6-4), and Grigor Dimitrov (6-1, 6-1).
His confidence and sharp gameplay position him as a strong contender for a third title at Indian Wells.
Cerundolo, meanwhile, enters the match brimming with confidence following an impressive South American claycourt swing and a deep run in Indian Wells.
The Argentine overcame a challenging opener against Mackenzie McDonald and went on to defeat Novak Djokovic-conqueror Botic van de Zandschulp, as well as top-10 player Alex de Minaur.
Alcaraz acknowledged Cerundolo’s prowess during his pre-match press conference, noting the Argentine’s versatility across surfaces. “He plays really well on both [clay and hard courts]. Even grass, too. That means he’s a complete player,” Alcaraz said.
The two players have met twice before, with Alcaraz holding a 1-1 record. Their only tour-level encounter occurred at the 2024 Queen’s Club Championships, where Alcaraz emerged victorious. However, Cerundolo triumphed in their earlier 2019 Challenger match on clay.
Reflecting on the upcoming clash, Alcaraz emphasized the need for focus and aggression. “I will try to play aggressive with passion,” he said, adding, “I know his style. I’ve practiced a lot of times with him… I will try to be really focused.”
As Alcaraz bids for his second title of the season and 18th overall, the stakes are high. The winner of this quarterfinal will face either Jack Draper or Ben Shelton in the semifinals, with the chance to compete for glory in Sunday’s final.
