The United States swept the podium in the men’s 400-meter final at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, marking a historic achievement.
Chris Bailey led the charge, securing gold with a time of 45.08 seconds, followed by teammates Brian Faust and Jacory Patterson, who claimed silver and bronze respectively.
Bailey, the 2025 world leader with a season’s best of 44.70 seconds, showcased his composure and strength, leading the race from start to finish.
The 24-year-old, a former Paris Olympics 4x400m gold medalist, added an individual global title to his impressive resume.
“It was a goal we set, to sweep the podium. We came here knowing we had the talent, and we executed,” Bailey said after the race.
The silver medal was secured by Brian Faust, who equaled his personal best of 45.47 seconds. Jacory Patterson followed closely, finishing in 45.54 seconds to take bronze.
This 1-2-3 finish marked only the second time in the championships’ history that a single nation has swept an individual podium. The first time was in Belgrade 2022, when an Ethiopian trio took all three medals in a women’s event.
The absence of key contenders, including defending champion Alexander Doom and silver medalist Karsten Warholm, cleared the path for the US dominance. Rusheen McDonald of Jamaica, the bronze medalist from Glasgow, failed to advance from the heats.
Attila Molnar of Hungary, the European Indoor Champion, made a late surge, but it was not enough to break the American stronghold. He finished just outside the medals.
