Emma Raducanu’s impressive journey at the Miami Open came to a close in a hard-fought quarter-final match against world number four Jessica Pegula.
Despite battling through physical challenges, the 22-year-old Briton showcased resilience and skill before succumbing to a 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2 defeat.
Raducanu, ranked 60th in the world, displayed flashes of brilliance, particularly in the second set, where she played some of her best tennis since her 2021 US Open triumph.
She held a 5-2 lead and had four set points before requiring medical attention for dizziness. After a brief timeout, she returned to level the match in a thrilling tie-break.
However, Pegula’s consistency and aggressive play proved decisive in the final set. “It was tough,” Pegula admitted. “I just wanted to come out in the third set really strong, really quick, and jump on her.”
Raducanu’s Miami campaign marked a significant step forward, with victories over top-20 opponents Emma Navarro and Amanda Anisimova.
Her performance ensures a return to the top 50 of the WTA rankings and highlights her potential to compete with the world’s best.
Pegula advances to face 19-year-old Alexandra Eala, who stunned five-time major champion Iga Swiatek in a remarkable upset earlier in the tournament.
