Vipers SC bounced back from their recent defeat with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Lugazi on Thursday night, tightening their grip at the top of the Uganda Premier League table.
Midfielder Abdul-Karim Watambala was the match-winner, striking a powerful drive in the 68th minute to secure all three points for the Venoms under the floodlights of St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.
The win moves Vipers to 52 points after 22 games, five clear of second-placed NEC who are in action today against UPDF at Bombo Military Barracks.
Hussein Mbalangu’s NEC side have been in red-hot form, unbeaten in their last 14 matches and eager to maintain the pressure at the summit.
Watambala’s return to the starting lineup proved pivotal, with the midfielder linking well with Rogers Torach before rifling in the decisive goal.
Vipers created several first-half chances, with Isaac Ogwang, Yunus Sentamu, and Marvin Youngman all coming close, but it was the second half where their dominance paid off.
Meanwhile, at Kavumba Recreation Grounds, Soltilo Bright Stars boosted their survival hopes with a spirited 3-1 victory over Police.
Nelson Ssenkatuka was the standout performer, bagging a brace, while Noordin Bunjo also found the net. Police’s lone goal came from defender Daniel Jakony.
Bright Stars now move to 15 points, climbing to 14th on the 16-team log, while Police remain 12th on 23 points after 22 games.
As the title race and relegation battle intensify, all eyes will be on today’s fixtures where NEC travel to UPDF, BUL host SC Villa in Njeru and Mbarara City welcomes URA at Kakyeka.
