Morocco Triumphs in Penalty Shootout to Claim First U-17 AFCON Title

Morocco captured their maiden TotalEnergies CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations title with a dramatic 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Mali, following a tense goalless draw in the final at Stade El Bachir in Mohammedia.

The hosts held their nerve in a nail-biting conclusion, with goalkeeper Zakaria Alaoui emerging as the hero by saving two penalties to secure the historic win.

The victory marks a significant milestone for Morocco, ending their long wait for continental success at the U-17 level just two years after finishing as runners-up to Senegal.

Coach Nabil Baha praised his team’s discipline and resilience throughout the tournament, which saw them concede only one goal.

While Morocco celebrated their triumph, it was heartbreak for Mali, who were denied a third title despite dominating much of the match.

The West Africans had a goal disallowed by VAR in the first half for a handball in the build-up, while Morocco’s defensive pairing of Driss Ait Cheikh and Moncef Zekri proved instrumental in repelling Mali’s aggressive attacks.

In the decisive shootout, Morocco converted all four spot-kicks through Ziyad Baha, Zakari El Khalfioui, Amine Ouahabi, and Ilies Belmokhtar.

Mali’s Issa Koné and Lamine Keita saw their penalties saved, sealing the hosts’ victory to the delight of the home crowd.
