Xabi Alonso has confirmed he will leave Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the season, intensifying speculation of a move to Real Madrid.
The 43-year-old coach, who led Leverkusen to a historic undefeated Bundesliga title and German Cup double last season, announced his departure on Friday.
While Alonso didn’t comment on his next destination, BBC Sport’s Guillem Balague reports he will succeed Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid.
Alonso, a former Real Madrid player, stated his farewell was emotional after three “unbelievable” years at Leverkusen.
His announcement comes despite Leverkusen initially stating he was “comfortable” and planning for next season.
Ancelotti’s future at Real Madrid has been questioned, with reports linking him to the Brazil national team.
Alonso took over Leverkusen in October 2022, transforming them into Bundesliga champions. His final games in charge are against Borussia Dortmund and Mainz.
