Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez will serve his remaining international ban after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejected Uruguay’s appeal.
Nunez was banned for five games by Conmebol and fined £15,145 ($20,000) for a post-match altercation with Colombia fans at the Copa America semi-final in July 2024.
CAS ruled against the appeal, stating the players’ actions were “voluntary, violent and unjustified.”
Nunez has already served two games and will now miss Uruguay’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay, Venezuela, and Peru.
Four other Uruguay players, including Rodrigo Bentancur, were also initially banned for their involvement, but have since served their suspensions.
The Uruguay FA argued self-defence, citing a lack of police presence when fans allegedly confronted players’ families. However, CAS upheld Conmebol’s original decision.
