Meanwhile, two-time finalist Casper Ruud was a high-profile casualty, losing to Portugal’s Nuno Borges 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-0.
The Norwegian struggled with a knee injury, winning only one game in the final two sets. Borges advances to the third round for the first time in Paris.
Alcaraz will face either Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard or Damir Dzumhur next.
In other action, Italian eighth seed Lorenzo Musetti also progressed to the third round.
