The scenic highlands of Kisoro came alive on Saturday as close to 1,000 runners from Uganda and neighbouring countries converged for the 2025 Virunga Gorilla Marathon;
The marathon, a growing annual fixture that blends competitive sport with conservation and tourism, was held under the theme “Running for Conservation and Climate Action.”
This year’s edition featured four race categories: 6km, 10km, 21km, and the full 42km marathon; all starting from the Mayor’s Gardens in Kisoro Municipality.
The routes offered runners breathtaking views of the Virunga volcanoes, Lake Mutanda, and the lush vegetation that borders Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, affirming Kisoro’s status as one of Uganda’s prime eco-tourism destinations.
Organisers say this year’s marathon marks a significant leap in both scale and impact, making it the largest sports and tourism event in the Kigezi sub-region to date.
“We are thrilled by the turnout and support,” said Kenneth Kamukama, one of the event’s lead organizers.
“This marathon is not just a race; it’s a celebration of conservation, culture, and community development. We’re proud to use sports as a vehicle to promote tourism and sustainable livelihoods in Kisoro.”
Beyond the race, the marathon doubled as a platform for climate advocacy and community action.
Funds raised from the event will go toward local development projects, including an ambitious tree-planting initiative targeting 10,000 new trees, and support for local health and education programs.
The 2025 edition also featured the launch of the Neon Rave, a vibrant after-party powered by Tusker Lite and headlined by popular DJ Bugy.
The high-energy event, which took place under the stars, drew huge crowds and added a youthful, festive atmosphere to the weekend.
“Tusker Lite is all about bringing energy and unforgettable experiences to our consumers,” noted Mercy Atwongyeire, Project Manager at Uganda Breweries Limited.
“We love showing up in unique ways, especially at events that help us curate amazing moments for our vibrant and expressive consumers. The Neon Rave was a spectacular close to a beautiful marathon.”
With momentum on their side, the organisers have already announced plans to scale up the marathon in 2026.
They aim to widen regional participation, deepen community partnerships, and elevate the conservation goals that remain at the heart of the event.
