Just days after being officially appointed as coaches for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), Morley Byekwaso and Fred Muhumuza have unveiled their provisional squad for the tournament.
A total of 41 players have been summoned, an eye-catching number, and among them is Vipers SC forward Yunus Sentamu, whose inclusion has sparked plenty of conversation.
Sentamu, widely regarded as one of the most naturally gifted strikers of his generation in Uganda, has often been overlooked in national team selections.
This has long left fans puzzled, especially considering his consistent performances at club level.
Ironically, when it finally seemed like he was back in contention for the Cranes, Sentamu himself requested to be left out of the squad, a decision that raised even more eyebrows.
Interestingly, Muhumuza, one of Sentamu’s coaches at Vipers, is now part of the national setup.
Could his presence have played a role in trying to convince the striker to return?
There’s no doubting Sentamu’s quality. His impact on the CHAN stage is already etched in history, he remains Uganda’s all-time top scorer in the tournament, having netted three goals in the 2014 edition held in South Africa.
That standout performance earned him a move to Tunisian giants CS Sfaxien.
Since making his Cranes debut in 2014, Sentamu has gone on to earn 31 caps, scoring five goals.
Whether he adds to those numbers in CHAN 2024 remains to be seen, but his inclusion alone is already one of the most talked-about aspects of this squad.
