LeBron James is set to make NBA history, confirming his return for a record-breaking 23rd season.
The 40-year-old superstar has exercised his $53 million (£41m) player option, extending his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers for the 2025-26 season.
James’s agent, Rich Paul, stated the NBA’s all-time leading scorer is targeting an unprecedented fifth NBA Championship.
“He wants to make every season he has left count,” Paul told ESPN, emphasizing James’s desire for a “realistic chance of winning it all” while acknowledging the Lakers’ future building.
Currently tied with Vince Carter for the most NBA seasons played, James is also just 50 appearances shy of breaking Robert Parish’s record for regular-season games.
His career, which began with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2003, includes titles with the Miami Heat (2012, 2013), Cleveland (2016), and the Lakers (2020).
Notably, James also became the first father-son duo to play in an NBA game alongside his son, Bronny, in October 2024.
