Lugazi Take Co-Coaching Route, Join KCCA in Following Vipers’ Blueprint

Lugazi Football Club have become the latest Uganda Premier League side to embrace a co-coaching structure, naming Francis Mugerwa alongside Steven Bogere as joint head coaches ahead of the 2025/26 season.

The club confirmed Mugerwa’s arrival on Thursday, signing a one-year renewable deal that brings him straight into the dugout to share duties with Bogere.

The move mirrors recent high-profile changes at both KCCA and Vipers, where co-coaching setups have been implemented with growing popularity.

Mugerwa, a CAF A licensed tactician, brings years of topflight experience, having coached at Proline, Maroons, Onduparaka, Kitara, Arua Hill, and Bright Stars.

He was also part of the technical bench at Vipers during the 2020/21 season. His playing career includes stints at SC Villa and Bell FC, giving him a well-rounded understanding of Ugandan football.

“I couldn’t say no to this project,” Mugerwa told the club media. “Lugazi FC is full of young players and that excites me. Together with Coach Bogere and the entire technical team, we want to play entertaining football, get results, and make our home ground a fortress.”

The appointment comes just weeks after KCCA also opted for a dual-leadership model, announcing Jackson Magera and Brian Ssenyondo as co-coaches to lead the club’s rebuilding efforts.

That decision followed Vipers’ successful gamble last season when John ‘Ayala’ Luyinda and Fred Muhumuza were paired after Serbian Nikola Kavazovic’s early sacking.

The duo led Vipers to a League and Cup double, showing the system can work when chemistry and roles are clear.

Bogere, who guided Lugazi to a 13th-place finish last term and a Round of 16 Uganda Cup run, now has an experienced partner in Mugerwa as they aim to push the club further up the table.

The new-look Lugazi technical team includes Gerald Efiti (assistant coach), Kizza Adam (goalkeeping coach), and Wanyama Davis (fitness trainer).

Meanwhile, Coach Oliver Mbekeka departs following the expiry of her contract, with the club extending their gratitude for her service.
