The Zambia women’s national team, the Copper Queens, kicked off their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign with a 2-2 draw against hosts Morocco in Rabat.
Despite twice leading, including an early goal from Barbra Banda and a strike from Racheal Kundananji, Morocco battled back to equalize late in the game.
Kundananji, who plays for Bay FC, downplayed any disappointment, telling BBC Sport Africa, “This has just opened our eyes to go and work hard, make sure we manage the game, the next game and take the three points.”
Coach Nora Hauptle echoed this, calling it “a good start” against a “top team.”
The Copper Queens will now focus on their second Group A fixture against Senegal on July 9, 2025, at the El Bachir Stadium in Mohammédia.
