Newly promoted Leeds United have signed midfielder Sean Longstaff from Newcastle United for £12 million, plus potential add-ons.
The 27-year-old has signed a four-year deal, ending his 18-year association with his boyhood club.
Longstaff, who had one year left on his Newcastle contract, expressed his enthusiasm for the move: “It just fills you full of confidence and it just makes you want to repay those people. It is a massive, massive football club – similar to Newcastle in a lot of ways.”
The North Shields-born midfielder made 214 senior appearances for Newcastle, but saw limited playing time last season, mostly as a substitute.
Despite a memorable Champions League goal against PSG in 2023 and being an unused substitute in Newcastle’s Carabao Cup final win, Longstaff sought more regular first-team football.
Longstaff is Leeds’ fifth summer signing, joining defenders Sebastiaan Bornauw, Jaka Bijol, Gabriel Gudmundsson, and German forward Lukas Nmecha.
Leeds United kicks off their Premier League season at home to Everton on August 18th, following pre-season friendlies against Manchester United, Villarreal, and AC Milan.
