Byekwaso: Cranes Are Fit, Focused and Ready to Deliver at CHAN 2024

Uganda Cranes co-head coach Morley Byekwaso says the team has hit peak focus and fitness levels as final preparations for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) intensify.

Byekwaso, speaking ahead of the home-based national team’s campaign, praised the players for their response to a demanding training programme and called attention to the team’s tactical development.

“It’s been a tough journey, but the boys have responded well,” he said. “The level of focus and fitness we’ve achieved in this pre-season gives us confidence.”

But it’s not just about physical preparation. Byekwaso stressed that the team has invested heavily in tactical work — particularly in how players link up during attacking phases and recover quickly when out of possession.

“We’ve spent a lot of time observing player combinations, how they understand each other, from build-up to finishing,” he explained. “We’re working hard to remain compact when we lose the ball. Our focus is on getting results.”

Byekwaso also pointed to the leadership of senior players like Allan Okello, Rogers Torach, and Jude Ssemugabi as key to keeping the group stable and confident.

“This is our senior team, and playing at CHAN is a big stage,” he said. “But we are not afraid of the pressure. We are focused on doing what’s good for our nation.”
