Emma Raducanu continued her impressive run at the Washington Open on Thursday, advancing to the women’s singles quarter-finals by defeating four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
This follows her earlier upset of seventh seed Marta Kostyuk. Raducanu will now face wildcard Maria Sakkari.
The 2021 US Open champion is also through to the women’s doubles semi-finals with partner Elena Rybakina. Raducanu is set to become the new British number one when WTA rankings are updated on Monday.
“I knew I was going to have to play well and manage my own service games, which I’m really proud of how I did,” Raducanu told Sky Sports after her victory over Osaka.
However, it was a tough day for the British men. Cameron Norrie lost to Brandon Nakashima 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, while 2023 champion Dan Evans was defeated by Corentin Moutet 6-2, 7-6 (7-4).
